This was the place I began first connecting to the land. After completing my permaculture design certification, I travelled to the Big Island of Hawaii to live on its wet, tropical eastern edge off the red road in Pahoa. I chose this site because it is a similar bioregion to the system I live and work in in South Florida. During my time on island, I lived in a tent in the jungle, learned from many teachers both plant and person, and began to embody the Hawaiian concept of “malama aina” – caring for the land.
