Site Assessment - $155

A site assessment is the perfect way to gain a deeper understanding and relationship with the land you live on. Assessments are available for both personal and community lots. Megan specializes in community gardens and loves bringing them to life for a neighborhood to gather, learn, and grow.

The session will begin with a plant walk to identify existing plants. You’ll learn valuable information on edible & medicinal “weeds” already growing on your site and useful wild plants present in your system. You’ll then learn about sectors coming into your site. Soil conditions are assessed and suggestions will be provided for regenerative soil building strategies on-site. Hydrology is then assessed and suggestions are provided for catching and storing water. Important overall patterns of your land are discussed – sunlight, wind, and significant existing sectors.

You will have the opportunity to share your vision and desired yields for your space. Yields are what you want to get out of a site, from establishing food security, creating habitat for wildlife, to connecting with the living world. Have fun with this part of the site assessment, “yields are only limited by your imagination” – Bill Mollison.

Your site assessment concludes with preliminary suggestions and ideas for your space provided by Megan. With a greater understanding of the land and vision, a detailed design can now be created of the client to create a living system garden.

Detailed Garden Design - Price Varies

Once a site assessment has been completed, a consulting relationship begins and Megan will prepare a detailed design for you to transform your land into a living system garden.

Detailed Design & Consulting includes:

  • Hand-drawn designs for your living system garden with detailed plans for each zone on-site.
  • List of suggested plants suited to thrive in your unique place and suppliers.
  • List of local resources for accumulating biomass on your site for healthy, regenerative soil building. This includes guidance on beginning a composting system as well as access to free, hardwood mulch from local arborists and bioregional soil amendments like sargassum seaweed.
  • Continued Care Plan: a guide for how to care for your system. The most energy goes in when a system is first being established. The goal is to create a regenerative system that requires little outside energy to maintain. This keeps cost, labor, and environmental pressure down and creates a high functioning, largely self-sufficient system.
  • Permaculture Practices PDF: a guide to the permaculture ethics and principles for providing a strong foundation for your garden.
  • Interactive support from Megan throughout the creation process.

Megan’s ideal client is one who wants to actively participate in the process of creating and caring for a garden. She strongly believes that the many gifts to be received from a garden come from actually being in it and learning from it. There are many services you can hire to simply install a landscape for you, but the invaluable gift of growing is something hard to find.

Why create a Living System Garden in your backyard or in your community?

  • Creates a living classroom to learn from the patterns of nature and gain valuable skills to care for yourself, your neighbors, and the land you live on.
  • Food security and greater community resilience.
  • The most efficient way to grow food and medicine.
  • Uses the least amount of energy for the greatest amount of yield.
  • Promotes biodiversity, improves whole system stability and strength.
  • Provides a new, regenerative, local economic pathway.
  • Long-term food solution with minimal upkeep.
  • Tangibly demonstrates how to turn local waste into energy.
  • Acts as a research center and living plant library to exchange and share edible, medicinal, and useful plants that thrive in your bioregion.
