In the spring of 2019 I was hired by local non-profit Heal the Planet to create educational, nature-based programming in one of our city’s parks. That summer I gave a presentation to the head of the city of Fort Lauderdale’s Parks and Recreation department to convey the importance of these programs, and they agreed, funding the programs to make them accessible to all ages and backgrounds.
Since that time, the Circle of Life Experience has come to be. Named after a focus on connecting city residents with the feeling of being a part of the living world even in the urban environment, and for our emphasis on using recycled items from the local waste-stream.
The Circle of Life Experience includes an Incredible Edible Garden, Butterfly Garden, Food Forest, and Nature Trails through one of our city’s last remaining tropical hardwood hammocks. We’ve created self-guided tours for the edible garden, wetland boardwalk, butterfly garden, and even a driving tour of trees along the edge of the park road. I lead monthly nature tours and interactive workshops where visitors can earn service hours and learn about how to bring permaculture to life in our urban environment.
I am grateful to work with Heal the Planet where we provide free, educational resources to our community like this composting series –
